Can you use the lean start-up process with films? Here’s what I came up with:
As many of you have received invitations for, I am producing a live table reading event for our film, Making Moments. Click here for times, location, and tickets. Here is how this event came about:
Some of you might be familiar with the book The Lean Startup by Eric Ries. This book has really taken off in the start-up entrepreneurial community and has been a big success. It has now spawned the book series, The Lean Series. One of those books is Lean Customer Development written by Cynthia Navarro. The premise of the book is this: Many companies build a “great” product, then spend a million dollars on developing that product, and put it out on the market, and then no one buys it. Of course this is quite prevelant in the film world too. Lean Customer Development is about creating an MVP, (a minimal viable product), then taking it to your customers, find out what they think, and then iterate and build a product, they will not just say they like, but will really buy. So I started thinking, “How can I apply this to the film world?” .
So I thought, I know what I will do, I will create an MVP and take it to those who love this kind of genre of film. I will get the actors and act out the script and do an audio recording of the script, then I will take story boards, and edit the story boards to the audio, adding some sound effects and music. This will be simple to do, and give us our MVP, to take to the world, and ask the world, what do they like about the story, what would they take out, and what would they add. I was telling this to some entrepreneurial friends, and then one of them said, “I’d pay to see that!” . So I thought, let’s make this a live event, in front of a live audience and get their feedback. The idea got such a good response from entrepreneur and filmmaking friends, I decided let’s do it. So on April 10th, Friday, from 7-9:30 PM we are holding a live reading of the script with our actors and asking you the audience how we should make this movie.
It should also be a great meeting for people from the film community and the start-up, tech community to meet. To attend and for location and tickets click here. After the recording is done and edited to the story board, we will then take that recording and put it on our website and ask people from all over the world to give their input. We really want to be on the pulse and know what people want to see and give them a fun role in giving input into a movie being made. If you like what we are doing, please share with your social media friends.
We have brought to the production some really outstanding actors. This team of actors will be performing at our Live Table Reading Event, April 10, 2015, Friday at the NoD Co-Working Space. They are bringing to the event many years of experience and performances that are really bringing to life the script. It has been a great experience rehearsing with these guys and I believe you will really enjoy seeing them bring the script to life at the event.
